What is it?

Harm reduction is a set of strategies and activities aimed at reducing negative consequences of human behaviour regarding health (physical and mental). It's a pragmatic approach to risk mitigation. The fundamental underpinning of harm reduction is to base policy and practice on evidence.

Harm reduction is not just about drugs or alcohol: fastening car seat belts, wearing helmets when riding a bicycle, making holes in tops of ballpoint pen caps - these are also examples of harm reduction.
